AfterSchool with the Arts is a DCYF licensed program that provides instruction in music and the arts in a child care setting for children ages 5-13. The program uses a science-based model for enhancing the lives of children by allowing them to build competence in their particular area of interest and ability. Program specialty components can include Chorus, Dance, Yoga, Theater, Karate, Visual Arts, Piano, Violin, Cello, Percussion, and Guitar. Twice a year, the children perform in a concert for family and friends to highlight their accomplishments in their art and music lessons.
Now in its tenth year, the AfterSchool with the Arts program has grown tremendously. We have enrolled over fifty children from 13 different schools in the Riverside, East Providence and Barrington communities. Everyday, the children participate in enrichment classes that allow them to be creative, while building self-confidence and empowerment. Rather than being just another afterschool program, we include the element of art and music, which has been clinically shown to improve academic performance and social well-being. The artistic, personal, and emotional accomplishments these children make are the mission and purpose of this program.
The Riverside Family Center also has a Teen Mentoring Program for children ages 13-16. Teens work side-by-side with the Teacher Assistants in developing small projects to engage the younger children enrolled in AfterSchool with the Arts. Some of the projects done by our teen mentors include overseeing the computer lab, library trips, cooking classes, science projects, crafts, and board games. All teens are encouraged to come up with their own unique games and projects. This is a great opportunity for teens who may be interested in pursuing a future career in child care.
Our staff consists of college-educated Site Supervisors and Teacher Assistants with extensive experience in providing child care programming. Music and art instructors come to us with years of experience working with children and degrees in their area of expertise. Our Administrative Director has years of management experience and keeps on the financial straight and narrow road. Our board of directors includes community leaders, mental health experts, teachers and local businessmen and women. All work together to provide a quality program to the children of East Providence and the surrounding communities.
Children and teens may enroll in either program at any time throughout the school year. Transportation is available. If you would like more information about our programs, please call Mrs. Lampiniski and Ms.Ianni in Riverside @ 433-2822 . Thank you for your interest in our program.
